I discovered “Under Woods” in 2010, and was gobsmacked by the sheer concentration and character delivered by this vineyard. Rising from 50m to 150 altitude over a distance of 400m, planted on grey gravelly loam/mudstone and battling minimal water and constant threat from surrounding wildlife, this site is marginal to say the least; but when it all lines up, this fruit is epic. 2013 was the year to be Under Woods.
Steels Creek Vineyard
The vineyard sits just behind the small township of Yarra Glen in the district of Steels Creek. This is a fascinating meso-climate; this is the valley floor, yet typically cooler than many sites of the Yarra Valley due to its steep eastern aspect and the cold air drainage. Vines are 25 years old.
Varieties: 100% Syrah
16 months in barrel, French oak (25% new)
