The Spirit of Provenance

Welcome to my winemaking journey – the perpetual exploration of unique, high-quality vineyard sites. My aim is to discover and collaborate with different vineyards year to year, or to explore a new and interesting aspect of an already discovered site. With a focus on terroir inspired Rhone varietals and styles, my wines are an interpretation of these vineyard sites, and reflect the essence of their origins, capturing what I call the ‘Spirit of Provenance’.

When my explorations lead to a site of true distinction, the wines produced will be known as a “Pilgrim’s Flag” release. These wines will then become a permanent fixture in my collection, produced on an ongoing basis to express the character of this site as it evolves over time.

All explorers need a base, a spiritual home. Mine is Victoria’s Yarra Valley, though my exploration goes well beyond. It is a global one – a true journey of discovery around the world.

Marsanne is never in a hurry. Aside from its tardy ripening tendencies the 2012 ferment was slow, cool and relaxed. The winemaking was very stripped back – all about texture, character and freshness. Ten months on…

  • Warramunda Marsanne | 2011

While its true personality can take considerable time to shine, Marsanne’s flashy youth can be just as infectious. I love the ever-evolving bouquet; citrus, quince, apricot blossom, chervil, white rose and macadamia amplify in the glass….

  • ‘Le Pelerin’ Grenache Syrah | 2010

La Verrière is one of the highest located vineyards in France’s south-east. Perched above the tiny hamlet of Crestet, the biodynamic site rests on pebbly, calcareous terrain. Here, Grenache and Syrah express immense purity, depth, grace…
